5And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. 6Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
KJV
7And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 8Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. 9And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. 10And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? 11And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. 12And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed Me not, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

The LORD's reply about this matter)
Go up the mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, in the land of Moab, and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession: And die in the mount, and be gathered unto thy people; Because ye trespassed against Me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified Me not in the midst of the children of Israel.

  • Moses at Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin, struck the rock (twice), whereby God said to speak to the rock and it will bring forth water. This event is connected with why Moses was not allowed to go into the promise land, and the reason God gave was: "ye trespassed against Me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh and sanctified Me not"
  • In all three times when Moses replied, He used the phase; "for your sakes."
  • It is recorded; "And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face," Deuteronomy 34:10.
