John 2:1-11
1And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. 3And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus said unto Him, They have no wine. 4Jesus said unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. 5His mother said unto the servants, Whatsoever He says unto you, do it. 6And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. 7Jesus said unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8And He said unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. 9When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10And said unto him, Every man at the beginning does set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou has kept the good wine until now. 11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth His glory; and His disciples believed on Him.

  • I included this here because it is very significant; New wine is symbolic as being the blood of Christ of the new Covenant, hence I see it not only as the beginning of miracles but also the foundation of all miracles. For if it were not for the New Covenant and the blood of Jesus there would be no miracle working power at all.
  • In the very beginning God formed a woman for Adam, and Adam knew his wife, and at the end of the book we will partake in the great marriage feast of the Lamb. God is relational, He is for marriage; "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: Hebrews 13:4a.
  • The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, Matthew 22:2.
  • There is much that could be said about the importance of marriage, relationships and new wine as being a picture of the blood of the lamb. I encourage you to meditate on this first miracle that Jesus did, for it is rich in meaning. It has far more meaning than just suppling further libation for a wedding parity.
