Matthew 14:22-33 Mark 6:45-52 John 6:16-21
22And immediately Jesus constrained His disciples to get into a boat and to go before Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23And when He had sent the crowds away, He went up into a mountain apart to pray. And when evening had come, He was there alone. 24But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves; for the wind was against them. 25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a phantom! And they cried out for fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Be of good cheer, I AM! Do not fear. 28And Peter answered Him and said, LORD, if it is You, tell me to come to You on the water. 29And He said, Come. And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30But seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me! 31And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him; and said to him, Little-faith! Why did you doubt? 32And when they had come into the boat, the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, Truly You are the Son of God.

45And immediately He constrained His disciples to get into the boat and to go before to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent away the crowd. 46And taking leave of them, He went away to the mountain to pray. 47And when evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. 48And He saw them toiling in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them. And about the fourth watch of the night He came toward them walking on the sea, and would have passed by them. 49But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a phantom, and cried out. 50For they all saw Him and were troubled. And immediately He talked with them, and said, Be of good cheer. I AM! Do not be afraid. 51And He went up into the boat to them. And the wind was cut off. And they were very much amazed within themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52For they did not understand the miracle of the loaves, for their hearts were hardened.

16And when evening had come, the disciples went down to the sea 17and entered into a boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18And the sea rose up because of a great wind that blew. 19Then having rowed about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the ship. And they were afraid. 20But He said to them, I AM! Do not be afraid. 21Then they willingly received Him into the boat. And immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

  • In the Gospel of Mark; "He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by". If we believe that our own worldly strength or wisdom will save us. God will leave us on our own to overcome the problem, (He will not violate our free will). He only intervenes when we are willing and we ask Him into our lives.
  • In the Gospel of Matthew and Mark in is recorded that, Jesus spoke to Peter and said, come. Peter began to walk on the water, until he took his focus off of Jesus and fear set in. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, Philippians 4:13.
  • The gospel of John does not record, Peter walking on the water, for this event was not within the focus of John's gospel, for as Jesus said to His disciples: Yet, do not rejoice in this, that the evil spirits are subject to you, rather rejoice because your names are written in Heaven, Luke 10:20.
