Matthew 23:23 Luke 11:42
23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe, #586, of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
KJV
42But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe, #586, mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
KJV
Insights
  • Strong's Greek number 586 is defined as: to tithe (as a debtor or creditor):- (give, pay, take) tithe.
  • The Scribes and Pharisees were viewing their tithe as an obligation, and yet they were overlooking the weightier things of God such as mercy, love and faith.
  • God does want us to give, for when we give it is usually a representation of where our heart is. And in-order for our giving to be a true representation of our heart, any connection with obligation must be removed. Our giving needs to be from our heart and not out of duty.
