Matthew 8:23-27 Mark 4:35-41 Luke 8:22-25
23And He entering into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24And behold, a great tempest arose in the sea, so much so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. 25And His disciples came to Him and awakened Him, saying, Lord, save us! We perish! 26And He said to them, Why are you afraid, little-faiths? Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27But the men marveled, saying, What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

35And evening having come, He said to them on that day, Let us pass over to the other side. 36And when they had sent away the crowd, they took Him with them as He was in the boat. And there were also other little boats with Him. 37And there arose a windstorm, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was now full. 38And He was in the stern of the boat, asleep on a headrest. And they awakened Him and said to Him, Master, do You not care that we perish? 39And He awakened and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40And He said to them, Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith? 41And they feared exceedingly and said to one another, What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?

22And it happened on a certain day that He went into a boat with His disciples. And He said to them, Let us go over to the other side of the lake. And they put out to sea. 23But as they sailed, He fell asleep. And a storm of wind came onto the lake. And they were being filled with water and were in jeopardy. 24And they came to Him and awakened Him, saying, Master, Master, we are perishing! Then being aroused, He rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. 25And He said to them, Where is your faith? And being afraid, they marveled, saying to one another, Who then is this One? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!

  • In Luke's account Jesus said: Let us pass over to the other side. This was a Word from God and could have been enough to give the disciples the assurance that they would get over to the other side.
  • In all three accounts, the disciples being in distress woke Him up, concerned about their perishing. In all accounts Jesus questioned their little-faith. Regardless of the worldly circumstances, we need to have faith, for it is impossible to please God without faith, Hebrews 11:6.
  • In all three accounts, the disciples afterwards questioned and said; What kind of man is this? This also shows the disciple's hardness of heart (lack of believing in the supernatural).
