12And Jesus went into the temple of God and cast out all those who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of those who sold doves. 13And He said to them, It is written, "My house shall be called the house of prayer"; but you have made it a den of thieves. 14And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.

15And they came to Jerusalem. And entering into the temple, Jesus began to cast out those who bought and sold in the temple. And He overthrew the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 16And He would not allow any to carry a vessel through the temple. 17And He taught, saying to them, Is it not written, "My house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations?" But you have made it a den of thieves.
MKJV
45And entering into the temple, He began to cast out those selling and buying in it, 46saying to them, It is written, "My house is a house of prayer, "but you have made it a den of thieves. 47And He taught in the temple daily. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy Him.
MKJV
13And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting. 15And when He had made a scourge of small cords, He drove them all out of the temple, also the sheep and the oxen. And He poured out the money-changers' money and overthrew the tables. 16And He said to those who sold doves, Take these things away from here. Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise.

Insights
  • Matthew's, Mark's, and Luke's account of Jesus cleansing the temple is after His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, a few days before His Crucifixion. Whereby John's account is near the very start or His earthly ministry, right after Jesus turned water into wine, at the wedding in Cana.
  • Since we have account(s) of this at the beginning and at the end of Jesus earthly ministry, this tells us that Jesus always had this boldness, His desire to keep the temple holy and pure.
  • From the accounts we see that the temple or the house of worship should be separate from the affairs of the world, a house devoted God, a house of prayer and not of the daily exchanges and trading of the world.
