Luke 10:1-20
1And after these things the Lord appointed seventy others, And He sent them two and two before His face into every city and place where He was about to come. 2Then He said to them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest that He may send forth laborers into His harvest. 3Go! Behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. 4Carry neither purse nor bag nor sandals. And greet no one by the way. 5And into whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this house. 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest on it. If not, it shall return to you, 7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking the things shared by them; for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Do not move from house to house. 8And into whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. 9And heal the sick that are in it, and say to them, The kingdom of God has come near you! 10And into whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, going out into the streets say, 11Even the dust of your city which clings to us, we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near you. 12But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.
- - - [ verses 13 to 16 skipped, till the return of the 70 ] - - -
17And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us through Your name. 18And He said to them, I saw Satan fall from Heaven like lightning. 19Behold, I give to you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the authority of the enemy. And nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20Yet do not rejoice in this, that the evil spirits are subject to you, rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.

Insights
  • The seventy went out two by two, this shows, (teamwork, accountability and safety in numbers). The disciples went before Him into every city and place where He was about to go. In this sense they were much like John the Baptist preparing the way..
  • Jesus said pray the Lord of the harvest, that is most urgent. We have been given the great commission to spread the Word, but only God through His Holy Spirit can bring someone to believe in Christ.
  • Sent forth as lambs among wolves, this is a dark world and the world does not always comprehend the light. To further establish this difference, Jesus sent them out walking by faith; take neither money, knapsack, nor sandals and don't great others on the way. This may sound almost rude, but worldly conversation can quickly compromise the truth of the Word.
  • Whatever house you stay at may peace abide there, if not it will return to you. stay in that house eating and drinking what is before you, for laboring in the Word is worthy of the hire.
  • Heal the sick and preach the gospel of the kingdom of God.
  • When they came back, Jesus was pleased with their results! Saying He saw the works of the enemy fall and reaffirming the power that He had given them.
  • When Jesus sent them out, He sent them out as harvesters. He did not mention anything about power to cast out demons. Yet, when they returned, they told Him of their new found power. We need to step out-- spread our wings and try, we all fail at times, the biggest failure is not to try.
  • Last of all Jesus told them what is of absolute importance, Do not rejoice in this, but rather rejoice that your names are written in the book of life.
