15And they came to Jerusalem. And entering into the temple, Jesus began to cast out those who bought and sold in the temple. And He overthrew the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 16And He would not allow any to carry a vessel through the temple. 17And He taught, saying to them, Is it not written, "My house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations?" But you have made it a den of thieves. 18And the scribes and the chief priests heard. And they sought how they might destroy Him. For they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His doctrine.

But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy Him. 48And they could not find what they might do, for all the people were hanging on Him, listening.

  • The Lord's house is a house of prayer, Isaiah 56:7. They were selling animals for sacrifices and exchanging money into acceptable currency for temple giving. Placing service fees on all, there were also merchants caring goods through the temple area. It had become a real market square.
  • The chief priests and scribes did not stop Him, for they feared the people who were hanging on Him being very attentive to His teachings. The chief priests and scribes were now losing control. This was the ultimately reason why they crucified Jesus.
  • In Matthew's account it says, He healed the blind and the lame, in Luke's account it says Jesus taught the people and in Mark's account it talks of His doctrine. In all accounts, Jesus never gave up teaching, preaching and healing unto the very end.
