Author: --- Background & Theme --- dated at:
Apostle John (v 1:1), one of the 12 disciples and brother of James. This letter was written to the elect woman, (most likely a church member or an elder). Much like third John the letter addresses a personal issue concerning a church problem. And John concludes the letter by saying. I do not wish to write in pen and ink about this matter, but will rather speak to you in person. Implying that, some issues are of a sensitive nature and should only be addressed in person.

2nd John

1John, the elder,

To the elect woman and her children, who I love in truth and the other believers as well, 2because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever.

3Grace, mercy and peace be with you from God the Father and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, in truth and love.

4I rejoice to see that your children are walking in the truth as we have received the commandment from the Father. 5I now plead with you, lady, to love one another and walk in love as was the commandment from the beginning. 6Love is that we walk according to His commandments, as we have heard from the beginning.

7For many deceivers have gone out, who do not confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, they are deceivers and an antichrist. 8Be on guard that we do not become as they are and lose what we have worked for, so that we might receive our full reward. 9For whomever transgresses, not abiding in the doctrine of Christ, does not have God. But, he who abides in the doctrine of Christ, has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you who does not believe the doctrines that Jesus gave us, do not receive them in your house nor even greet them. 11For even he who greets them shares in the evil deeds of this person.

12I do have much to tell you, but I do not wish to do it with paper and pen, but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

13Greetings from the children of your faithful sister, Amen.
