Matthew 21:18-21 Mark 11:12-24
18And returning early to the city, He hungered. 19And seeing a fig tree in the way, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only. And He said to it, let no fruit grow on you forever. And immediately the fig tree withered away. 20And when the disciples saw, they marveled, saying, How quickly the fig tree has withered away! 21Jesus answered and said to them, Truly I say to you, If you have faith and do not doubt, you shall not only do this miracle of the fig tree, but also; if you shall say to this mountain, Be moved and be thrown into the sea; it shall be done.
MKJV
12And on the next day, they going out of Bethany, He was hungry. 13And seeing a fig-tree with leaves afar off, He went to it, if perhaps He might find anything on it. And when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season of figs. 14And Jesus answered and said to it, No one shall eat fruit of you forever. And His disciples heard.

20And passing on early, they saw the fig-tree dried up from the roots. 21And Peter, remembering, said to Him, Rabbi, behold, the fig tree which You cursed has withered away. 22And answering Jesus said to them, Have faith of God. 23For truly I say to you that whoever shall say to this mountain, Be moved and be cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he said shall occur, he shall have whatever he said. 24Therefore I say to you, All things, whatever you ask, praying, believe that you shall receive them, and it will be to you.

  • Words are powerful, in both accounts Jesus went on to say: "if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive".
  • The fig tree can be used as a lesson today. If there is any thing in our lives, that is not of God. We have the power and the authority of the Word of God to "curse it at the root", and expect it to die.
  • The mountain is analogous to an obstacle that may be in our way. We have the authority to use the power of the Word, and expect it to be moved.
