Matthew 7:24-27 Luke 6:47-49
24 Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on a rock. 25And the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house. And it did not fall, for it was founded on a rock. 26And everyone who hears these sayings of Mine and does not do them shall be compared to a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27And the rain came down, and the floods came, and the wind blew and beat on that house. And it fell, and great was its fall.
MKJV
47Whoever comes to Me and hears My Words, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like. 48He is like a man who built a house and dug deep and laid the foundation on a rock; and a flood occurring, the stream burst against that house and could not shake it; for it was founded on a rock. 49But he who hears and does not perform, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, on which the stream burst, and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.

Matthew's account uses the contrast of a rock vis. sand, while Luke's account uses the contrast of digging a foundation deep and placing it on a rock vis. building on the earth having no foundation.
  • If we equate building on a rock as to building on and having the foundation of God's Word, then the contrast of this would be not being founded on God's Word, but rather being grounded in the worlds system.
Knowing what was spoken before Jesus gave this metaphor often times tells us of the related subject matter.
  • In Matthew's account Jesus had just ended saying; In those days, many will say to Me, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied, cast out devils and done many wonderful works in your name. And I will profess to them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:22-23
  • In Luke's account Jesus ended saying; And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Luke 6:46.
Thus we see that in both accounts the subject that Jesus is addressing is being faithful and grounded in the Word of God.
