Matthew 13:54-58 Mark 6:1-6
54And when He had come into His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so much so that they were astonished and said, From where does this man have this wisdom and these mighty works? 55Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brothers, James and Joses and Simon and Judas, 56and his sisters, are they not all with us? Then from where does this man have all these things? 57And they were offended in Him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country and in his own house. 58And He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
MKJV
1And He went out from there and came into His native-place. And His disciples followed Him. 2And when the Sabbath day had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him, were astonished, saying, Where does this one get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to him, that even such mighty works are done by his hands? 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at Him. 4But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his native-place, and among his own kin, and in his own house. 5And He could do no work of power there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick ones, He healed them. 6And He marveled because of their unbelief. And He went around the villages, in a circuit, teaching.

Insights
  • Jesus began teaching in the synagogues, just as was His practice wherever He went. And the people were astonished at His wisdom, and the few mighty works that He did. Yet they were offended at Him. Out of familiarity with him and his family, they could not accept Him as the Son of God. For they kept saying in their hearts, isn't he just as we are? And thus their faith was hinder from receiving from Him.
  • The healings Jesus did in other villages or cities says that Jesus healed them all. This has to mean that all who came to Him. It is most-likely that in His home town few people came to Him.
  • Jesus stayed focused: He was not diverted because of their unbelief or the situation, (Jesus did not stay there trying to convince them of His abilities). In Mark's gospel, it says that; He then went about the villages in a circuit, teaching. Do not allow the circumstances around you, to distract you from achieving your goal.
