Matthew 17:14-20 Mark 9:17-29 Luke 9:37-42
14And when they came to the crowd, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, 15Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and grievously vexed; for oftentimes he falls into the fire, and often into the water. 16And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him. 17Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him here to Me. 18And Jesus rebuked the demon, and he departed out of him. And the child was cured from that very hour. 19Then the disciples came to Jesus apart, and said, Why could we not cast him out? 20And Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Move from here to there. And it shall move. And nothing shall be impossible to you. 21Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

17And one of the crowd answered and said, Teacher, I have brought my son who has a dumb spirit to You. 18And wherever he seizes him, he dashes him. And he foams and gnashes his teeth and pines away. And I spoke to Your disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not. 19He answered him and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me! 20And they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, the spirit immediately convulsed him. And he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming. 21And He asked his father, How long ago has it been since this came to him? And he said, From childhood. 22And oftentimes it has cast him into the fire and into the waters to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. 23Jesus said to him, If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes. 24And immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. 25And seeing that a crowd is running together, Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him, Dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter no more into him! 26And the spirit cried out, throwing him into convulsions, and came out of him. And he was like one dead, so that many said, He is dead. 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28And He entering into a house, His disciples asked Him privately, Why could we not cast him out? 29And He said to them, This kind can come out by nothing except by prayer and fasting.

37And it happened on the next day, they coming down from the mountain, a huge crowd met Him. 38And behold, a man cried aloud from the crowd, saying, Teacher, I beseech You, look on my son, for he is my only-born son. 39And lo, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out. And it throws him into convulsions, with foaming, and with pain departs from him, bruising him. 40And I begged Your disciples to cast him out, and they could not. 41And answering, Jesus said, O unbelieving generation, one having been perverted, how long shall I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here. 42And as he was still coming, the demon violently convulsed and tore him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the child and delivered him again to his father.

Insights
  • Jesus, Peter, James and John had just come down from a mountain where Jesus was transfigured.
  • It is possible to have faith and unbelief at the same time. The father of the boy said, I believe, help my unbelief. We have all been given a measure of faith, Romans 12:3. What inhibits our faith from working is how much unbelief from the world we choose to add in with it.
  • The Disciples were unable to cast out the unclean-spirit. When Jesus was told this, He said; O faithless and perverse generation. Jesus was not pleased with his disciples lack of ability. Faithless and perverse generation; can be equated to, not having faith in God's Word. For, perverse is defined as "(morally corrupt), referring to ones mindset". Being carnally minded, Romans 8:6, rather than seeking the mind of Christ, 1st Corinthians 2:16.
  • Jesus spoke to His disciples and said; This kind comes out only through prayer and fasting. At the name of Jesus every demon must submit, there is nothing more powerful than the name of Jesus! Prayer and fasting does not add to the name of Jesus or make the Word more powerful. Prayer and fasting builds up our faith and tears down our unbelief.
